Biography
Previously working under the moniker of Bannerman and before that, founder of the Auckland Funk/Soul collective, One Million Dollars, not to mention singer and guitarist in the now retired Batucada Sound Machine, Richie has returned to NZ after a 12 year stint in Berlin, where he continued to build his reputation as a songwriter, producer and session player. A few years after arriving in Berlin, Richie dropped the Bannerman tag and began to release under his own name (the 2019 Aimless Survivor EP and the album Curious Growth from 2022) as well as beginning a new recording project known as Bliss Creek (a self-titled album on the Kinship label in 2020). He was a member of music collective The Hole Boys, collaborating with many artists from Berlin and throughout the world as part of the bi-monthly concert series, Neukölln Country Club. Participating artists included Sean Nicholas Savage, Molly Nilsson, DENA, World Brain, John Moods and Discovery Zone, to name only a few. He also toured and performed as a multi-instrumentalist with Kat Frankie and Max Prosa. Support slots throughout Germany and Europe included Tiny Ruins, The Magic Numbers, Marlon Williams, Julia Jacklin, Margaret Glaspy, Shovels & Rope, Anais Mitchell and Lawrence Arabia. Alongside albums by NZ bands, One Million Dollars, Batucada Sound Machine, Ziko and The Brood, Richie has released 3 solo EPs and 4 full length albums. The Bannerman album Dearly Departed received a New Zealand Music Award for 'Best Cover Art' at the 2011 NZMA and his song She Was A Mountainside, from the Dusty Dream Hole album was shortlisted for the 2010 APRA Silver Scroll Award. He is a published songwriter, contracted to Concord Publishing who have offices worldwide and his works have appeared in feature films, documentaries, commercials and television. Before leaving NZ, Richie worked part time for the now defunct online music retail store, amplifier.co.nz, which specialised in selling content from Aotearoa artists as digital downloads, Vinyl and CDs, to customers both locally and abroad. He was also the Catalogue Manager for the largest independent digital aggregator in NZ, Digital Rights Management (DRMNZ).
